Hand Painted West African Hair Salon Sign

$250.00
sold out

This a hand painted hair salon sign from West Africa. These are a bit of a big deal. Exhibitions in galleries around the world have showed this fine example of outsider, folk art and they are rather collectable

Often produced with house paint on found materials like plywood or Masonite. They are a catalogue of styles and services offered by the vendor.
Were these painted by multi skilled hairdressers or was there some legend cruising around painting everyone's signs?
It's often difficult to date these as there is rarely a year painted in the bottom corner like you might see on a canvas. In fact the best way to approximate the date is to look at the haircuts and match with the usually american celebrity gracing television at the time. Apparently that classic Mike Tyson shave with a line into the forehead was very hot at the time as was the iconic Mr T tomahawk.

This one is from Lome Togo and how this made its way to Lyon France is anyone's guess.
