Early 18th century abstract tapestry collage

$8,100.00

In provincial France at the turn of the 18th century, there was a young girl who dreamed of becoming a tapestry weaver. Although she was of humble means, she was a naturally gifted weaver with an eye for detail and the hands of a surgeon. Once she came of age, she traveled from her small village to apply to the most prestigious tapestry guild in all of France. Though she was wildly talented and by far the best applicant, she was denied entry due to her homemade clothes and humble origins. She was shattered. She was angry. And she swore revenge against the institution that had so unfairly rejected her talents.

From that day forth, once the sun had set, tapestries began to disappear from the walls of castles and manors across the land. Only to be found later, torn apart and restitched into magnificent new collages, hanging in the town square.

Some say the vigilante artist was a ghost; others say it was a poor girl in homemade clothes.

Early 18th-century abstract tapestry collage. Criminal or hero, you can’t deny — somebody or something was damn talented.

Freshly cleaned and repaired, with a new backing applied for strength. Hung on Velcro. Sourced in Lyon 🇫🇷
